Battania is kinda messed up, because an army of fians or the lower tier variants will beat an equal sized army of pretty much anything, including a balanced fian army. It also doesn’t help that if you take the right perks that ranged units start costing negative upkeep. So they are cheaper while being more effective.

PS: I play as bannerlord dificulty. The main thing that'll reduce shield infantry casualties for any faction is telling your shieldwall to hold fire for the approach. That way, they never lower their shields to throw javs. This is especially important against crossbows which pack quite a punch per shot.
